Sourcing
doTERRA sources turmeric from various regions of India and Nepal. It is a widely used spice in both countries, so it is abundantly cultivated for the spice market.
Turmeric essential oil comes from the plant's rhizome, which is the underground stem from which the root system grows, and which is usually dried and then ground into a spice. It is sometimes grown as an intercrop alongside maize, sugarcane, and other cash crops. Many growers switch to turmeric after a few years of growing sugarcane. They remove the sugarcane from the ground and plant turmeric in its place, as it helps to provide nutrients to the soil. Indian growers say that turmeric cultivation acts as a natural insecticide and fungicide for the soil – thus, turmeric cultivation proves beneficial for the soil alone – and sugarcane planted after turmeric produces significantly higher yields. The essential oil is extracted from the plant by steam distillation. After cultivation and harvesting, turmeric rhizomes are sorted into different categories. doTERRA's turmeric essential oil is produced by distilling a mixture of dry and fresh turmeric.
